The Wonders of a Study Abroad in Japan Program

Studying abroad during your college years can be a life altering decision. Most people cherish the time they spent abroad as their one real time where they went outside their comfort zones and experienced a culture and in many cases a language that was completely foreign to them. A study abroad in Japan program can be one of the most magical experiences of your life, and if as an American you’re looking for a culture that is completely foreign yet warm and hospitable then Japan might be exactly what you’re looking for.

From the moment you land in Tokyo’s Narita airport you know that this is going to be a complete culture shock, and that you must adapt very quickly. You’ll likely find that whether you’re staying and studying in the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, or a sleepy fishing village somewhere on one of the smaller islands (Honshu being the main island where Tokyo and such icons as Mt. Fuji are located), that the people are extremely welcoming and helpful to tourists and visitors. For such a historically isolated culture, the Japanese certainly make you feel at home in their country and people will go out of their way to help you with directions and to give you information.

The actual study abroad in Japan program can be completely varied, and it generally depends on your ability to speak and understand the Japanese language. One popular option is to take intensive Japanese language courses while supplementing that study with an arrangement where you live with a Japanese host family. If you are dedicated enough to not “cheat” and speak English with host family members who can speak the language then you are effectively living twenty four hours a day in a Japanese speaking environment. There’s no quicker way to pick up the language than to be immersed in it all day every day. If you are coming into the study abroad program with a good base of Japanese knowledge you can even be brave enough to take full university courses taught in Japanese, as that’s certainly an option available.

Studying abroad in Japan truly can be one of the best experiences of your life, and if you’re willing to think outside the box and venture to Asia for your study abroad program you will not regret it. It’s tough to beat the opportunity to live and study in a culture with as much history as Japan’s.
